Chain Whip for less than a £10

Well, new chain whips are not very expensive, but it is possible to make one for virtually no cost what so ever. I brought mine before finding out how to make them. Mine also has a notch to remove my fixie lock-ring which most people won’t need.

Chain whips can be made from surplus bar or heavy duty sheet and an old chain. Ideally a piece of flat bar with a rectangular profile about 20mm x 5mm and 400mm long

  1. Cut the bar to 40cm length
  2. Drill 2 holes 4mm diameter about 8 cm apart
  3. Insert chain into the holes
